What to See in the Caldera

The Volcano & Hot Springs

The islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni are at the center of the caldera. All boat tours stop at Nea Kameni, allowing you to hike a 20-30 minute path to the crater of the active volcano. The next stop is usually Palea Kameni for a swim in the sulfur-rich, lukewarm thermal springs.

The Caldera Towns

The villages of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani are perched on the caldera's cliffs, offering breathtaking views. Fira is the bustling capital, while Oia is famous for its sunsets. A popular activity is the scenic 10km hike along the cliff edge from Fira to Oia.

Thirasia Island

Part of the original island before the eruption, Thirasia offers a glimpse of a quieter, more traditional Greek island life. Full-day boat tours often include a stop here, giving you time to swim or have lunch at a seaside taverna in the village of Manolas.

Getting to Your Boat Tour

Most boat tours depart from one of two main ports: the Old Port (Fira Skala) below Fira, or Ammoudi Bay below Oia. To reach the Old Port from Fira, you have three options: a 3-minute cable car ride (€6 each way), a 20-30 minute donkey ride, or walking down the 587 steps. The cable car is highly recommended, especially for the return journey uphill, but queues can be long when cruise ships are in port.

Some catamaran cruises depart from the southern marina of Vlychada. All our tour options specify the departure point and whether hotel pickup is included. Always allow extra time to get to the port, especially during peak season.

How long is the hike on the volcano?
The walk to the crater and back takes about 30-45 minutes in total. The path is rocky and uphill, so comfortable, sturdy shoes are a must.
Can I visit the volcano without a tour?
No, the volcanic island of Nea Kameni is uninhabited and only accessible by organized boat tours.
Do I have to swim to reach the hot springs?
Yes, boats anchor about 30-50 meters away from the shallow, warm waters. You will need to swim from the boat to reach the springs.
Is the Fira to Oia hike difficult?
The 10km hike is considered moderate, taking 3-5 hours. It's mostly flat or downhill from Imerovigli to Oia, but there is little shade, so it's best to go early in the morning or late afternoon.
Is food available on Thirasia?
Yes, there are several traditional tavernas along the waterfront where you can have lunch during the 2-hour stop on full-day tours. Lunch is not typically included in the tour price.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Tours may be cancelled in cases of very high winds or rough seas. If this happens, you will be offered the choice of an alternative date or a full refund.
