Hike to the crater of an active volcano, swim in thermal hot springs, and watch the legendary Oia sunset from the Aegean Sea.
Book a Boat TourThe Santorini Caldera is a massive, sea-filled volcanic crater, one of the most spectacular natural sights in the world. Formed by the colossal Minoan eruption around 1600 BC, its steep cliffs are now home to the iconic white villages of Fira and Oia. The best way to experience its scale and beauty is from the water. Our boat tours take you to the heart of the caldera to hike the volcano and swim in hot springs. For planning, see our visitors guide and tips on the best time to visit.

The Eruption That Forged an Island
Around 1600 BC, the island then known as Strongyli ("the round one") was shattered by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. The Minoan eruption, rated 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, was so powerful it caused the center of the island to collapse into the sea, forming the vast caldera we see today. The event is believed to have triggered enormous tsunamis that devastated the Minoan civilization on nearby Crete and may have inspired the legend of Atlantis.
Today, the two small islands at the center of the caldera, Palea Kameni ("Old Burnt Island") and Nea Kameni ("New Burnt Island"), are the result of subsequent, smaller eruptions. When you join a boat tour, you sail across this ancient, flooded crater and can even hike on Nea Kameni, the youngest volcanic land in the Eastern Mediterranean, which last erupted as recently as 1950.
